Albany
“The Coolest Small Town in Texas”

Home of the Hereford and the Fort Griffin Fandangle, the oldest outdoor musical in Texas, Albany is Northwest Texas’ oldest town. Its preserved frontier flavor, and rich history can be glimpsed at the Old Jail Art Center and by walking the Shackelford County Courthouse Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1938 the Fort Griffin Fandangle outdoor musical pageant has been performed telling its story from the Indian to discovery of oil and gas in 1910. Upscale shops in downtown restored buildings offer antiques, gifts, women’s clothing, men’s out-of-doors/hunting supplies, interior design, kitchenware, and Texana books. A Gazebo on the 1883 courthouse square can be booked for weddings at 325/762-2232. Fort Griffin Historic Site and State Park located 15 miles north of Albany some years holds an annual 1860 re-enactment. The Fandangle is held the last two full weekends in June. A Spring Event is held around May 1st. Also see the “native stone labyrinth” and “Walking Through History Trail”. Find Everything You’re Not Expecting in Albany.
