Cross Plains
A Caring
Community Looking Toward The Future
Cross
Plains was named for the crossing of stage coaches and military roads. Initially
called Schleicher, Cross Plains was renamed and granted a Post Office in 1878.
Early German settlers claimed this area to be as near paradise as one could imagine
with open plains, native grass and abundant wildlife. Cross Plains has always
been a farming and ranching center, however, in the 1920s it became an oil and
gas production center and, today has a large trade territory offering numerous
merchants, churches and restaurants. There is excellent dove, quail and white
tail deer hunting. Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian and Kull the
Conqueror, did most of his writing here. The Cross Plains Economic Development
Corp, Chamber of Commerce, Project Pride and other local organizations are working
to improve the economic well-being and provide a thriving future for the community.
