Early
“HOME OF THE STATEWIDE PECAN FESTIVAL”

Incorporated in 1951, Early is the youngest town in Brown County. Pecan trees grew wild along the banks of the Pecan Bayou. In 1888 F.A. Swinden founded the Swinden Pecan Orchard and built a dam across the Bayou for irrigation. In 1893 Walter U. Early came to Brown County and entered the law office of Goodwin and Grinnan, where he received a law dgree by self-study. In 1929 he donated almost 5 acres to build one school where 4 or 5 of the smaller surrounding schools consolidated with more classes and a safer land, which would not be prone to flooding. On January 12, 1952 first elections were held and J. Lee Hawkins was elected mayor. Early is growing from an original population of 625 in 1951 to 2588 in 2000 census. There is a diversified business climate with light manufacturing, toy accessory distribution center, and latest in gas leak detection technology, farming and ranching. Chamber of Commerce, 104 E.
