Robert Lee

“YOU SHOULD SEE ROBERT LEE”

Two early settlers who were Confederate veterans named the town after Robert E. Lee. The Colorado River Valley accommodated many ranching outfits. Around 1876 a group of Texas Rangers was sent to the area to quell disturbances over fence cutting. The Rangers were over-powered, disarmed and made to cut fences themselves. Soon a special session of the legislature was called and fence cutting was made a felony. A melted roll of barbed wire intended to string a fence, but burned along with thousands of fence poles, is part of the museum collection. The wide valleys between the mesas provide habitat for wildlife. Hunting is good. Lake Spence and Mt. Creek reservoirs provide ample water sources. Five birding sites, landing strip, camping and RV sites available. Volunteer EMS and firemen protect the area. Enthusiastic economic development is on going.
